Top Ten Tuesday #8 - Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke And The Bookish.

Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book

Ooh.  This is a really hard one, because I don't really have any must-have topics.  I have more must-avoid topics, actually, but that's not what this TTT is asking for. *pouts*  But I'm sure I can pull something out for this one, though I can almost guarantee I won't be able to think of ten.  Keep in mind, though, that more than key topics or words, I base my TBR decisions on reviews and recommendations, and the overall feel of the synopsis.

  1. Fantasy - I'm a fantasy whore. I love me some magic and mythical creatures, be it urban fantasy, YA fantasy, or high/epic fantasy. I read to escape reality. While contemporary novels are becoming a fast favorite, fantasy will always be my oldest and dearest book love.
  2. Depression-themed books - I know this may sound like a weird one, but I am incredibly drawn to raw, gritty novels.  Broken characters, dark themes, all with an underlying message of hope really speak to the depressed teenager that still lives somewhere inside of me.
  3. Romance - Okay, okay, don't start laughing at this one.  Sure, I'm the first to make fun of a poorly-done romance in a book, but I only bother reading it in the first place for the hope that it'll be one of those rare slow-building, completely engrossing romances that keep me up all night.  You know you love a good love story, too.
  4. Mythology - I love a good book rooted in ancient mythology.
  5. YA - Okay I may be cheating since this is more like an entire genre, but I am seriously running out of topics to pick!  I told you, this week is hard for me. :/
  6. ... Yeah, there is no 6.  I'm out, I've got nothing left.  So this week, you get 5. >.>

I tried to think of ten, I really did.  But aside from a choice few, I just don't pick books based off of general topics.  Link to your TTT in the comments so I can see if you thought of any that I missed!

  1. I'm in the same boat as you, absolutely unable to come up with ten. Really, I can think of only one that isn't so vague that it's useless.

    1. Identity

Books that deal with the idea of self in interesting ways I love. Whether it takes the forms the Unwind books offer, or the body swapping vertigo of Every Day, contemplating what it means to be me, is something I spend too much time doing.

So... uh... Can that count as a guest post? Because that's exactly what my TTT would be!

    1. Haha if so, that is the shortest guest post ever. But we can call it the thought-provoking comment of the day if you want.

  2. I like the depression themed books too any who ever went through a black period can identify. I'm very iffy about romance books, most are follow-the-formula rubbish. But if the romance is a side story rather the whole plot then it all works a lot better for me.

    1. Which is why I think they're such an important part of literature, especially YA. They have the power to help people feel less alone.

I'm iffy on romance, too, but only because so many are so poorly done. I'm such a sucker for the rare really good love story, though. I rarely read straight-up romance books, though. I think I'd die of embarrassment just having other people see the cover.

  3. So funny. I didn't think I'd be able to do very many either but I wound up leaving stuff out. Yet in a couple months when we do the opposite one, of topics we avoid...I think that will be even harder for me and my list will look more like this one haha. :)

    1. Are you rubbing it in? >:o Lol just kidding. I could have maybe throught of a few more, but I was in a rush when I posted this one so I didn't have time. I had to wrack my brain for this!

  4. Wow, you really are bad at this! Of course, I totally understand. I came up with ten, but they are more just vague topics/themes that interest me and that I'd like to read more about, but aren't necessarily must-haves. There really is so much to consider before picking up a book that it's hard just to say "Oh yeah, this one word/topic is all you need for me to give you my money!" Ummmm... no!

    1. Thanks, Asti! >:o Lol. I guess this week's list just wasn't for me. I'm right there with you, I'm not about to drop ten bucks on a book just because it has one theme that I kind of like. I'm a big one for basing my choices off of reviews.

As you may or may not know, life is eating up way too much of my spare time right now, so pretty please don't hate me if it takes me a few days to get back to your wonderful comments. I read each and every one from my phone, and they always make my day. <3
