Top Ten Tuesday #9 - Books I Read When I Want Something Light And Fun

Top Ten Books I Read When I Want Something Light And Fun

I first saw this topic and thought it would be a breeze to think of ten.  I do, after all, mostly read YA, which is known for fun, light reads.  But, the thing is...most are actually a lot deeper than they appear on the surface, and though I love them, I would never dream of adding books by Laurie Halse Anderson or John Green, or series' like The Hunger Games or Unwind to this kind of list.  But then there are the "light, fun" reads that I didn't think were all that fun, so I can't add those, either.  So though I did think of ten, and could probably have thought of a few more, this list wasn't nearly as easy to actually compile as I thought it would be.

These are the ten I thought fit this week's list the best, the light reads that were also fun and enjoyable.  They're listed in no particular order.

Anna And The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins- This is the book that immediately popped into my head when hearing this week's topic.  It epitomizes fun, light reads.

Sweep by Cate Tiernan - At under 200 pages per book, these are very light, addictive books that will probably still call to me ten years from now.

Daughter Of Smoke And Bone by Laini Taylor - If you haven't gotten it by now, I'm trying to put this book on just about every Top Ten Tuesday list that I can. I love it, and it's perfect for every possible mood I'm in. Be it something light and whimsical, or something with more depth, romance or poetic prose, angels or originality, Daughter Of Smoke And Bone is where I turn. Though the same can most definitely not be said about the sequel. I loved it, but there was nothing light and fun about Days Of Blood And Starlight.

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand - The immersive prose, quick-read feel and fun content make this a perfect addition to any light, fun read lists.

Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling - I love this series, and just about any time I'm looking for some carefree escapism, I turn to the boy who lived.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead - This is how a vampire YA series should be.  Fun, romantic, but still action-packed and kick ass, with vampires that are actually scary, not glorified sex gods.

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard - One of my biggest guilty-pleasure reads, this series is perfect for indulging the high school gossip girl that lives in all of us. Though the show is better, the books are still a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Vampire Knight by Matsuri Hino - Yes, I read this. Yes, it shamelessly contains almost every single cliche I'm so quick to make fun of in my YA Epidemics posts. But man, if you just need to kill an hour, these manga books are a great way to do it.

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles - I didn't absolutely love this one, but it's a great book to turn to when you're in the mood for something fun and easy to read.

Daughters Of The Moon by Lynne Ewing - One of my "staple" series, I grew up reading these books.  In fact, they may be what first introduced me to the romantic side of YA.  I probably wouldn't love them as much if I were reading them for the first time now, but Daughters Of The Moon evokes that sense of nostalgia that is impossible to resist.

As always, let me know which books on this list you agree or disagree with and share your light, fun reading choices, or link to your TTT in the comments if you have one this week!

  1. I didn't think about adding VA or Perfect Chemistry to my list - I probably should have. I had a hard time with this list!

  2. I could've probably added Vampire Academy to my list too. Unearthly is a great read.

  3. Perfect Chemistry is definitely a fun read. I am not a huge contemporary fan but I really enjoyed it. One of my goals this year is to read all of the VA series! Great List!

  5. I found this so hard, AATFK came straight into my head but I couldn't use it as I've yet to actually read it. And you totally cheated with DOSAB, that's not light and fun! It's so much more than than :) Sweep is a new on me, must have a look at it.

    1. Get to it and read it! And yeah haha, I know I did. But, in my defense, the topic called for books I turn to when I want something light and fun, and DOSAB is one of those books. It satisfies every one of my book cravings; light and fun, deep and dark, it's got it all.

    2. I'll allow it on a technicality so! But only barely and only because it's such a good book and because you pleaded a good case :-) LOL

  7. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is one of my new favorites but I would never consider it light. Beautiful, and wonderful, though. Although Anna was pretty light and fun: romance in Paris and all. I'll have to take a look at the others.

    1. Haha yeah, DOSAB is a bit of a cheat one for this list. But like I told Trish, I feel slightly justified because I really do turn to it when I want something light and fun, too. Plus I want to pimp it out on as many of these TTTs as possible since it's my single most favorite book.

      Thanks, Renee! :D

  8. I totally forgot about the Sweep series. I read those books in high school and I loved them. I think I need to revisit them. :)

    1. Me too haha. Read them in 9th grade for the first time, then like two or three times since. They're just fun books.

      Thanks, Kay!

As you may or may not know, life is eating up way too much of my spare time right now, so pretty please don't hate me if it takes me a few days to get back to your wonderful comments. I read each and every one from my phone, and they always make my day. <3
